Branding proposal for Coimbra's application
for the European Capital
of Culture 2027
(2nd place in an open competition).

The idea, presented in the competition rules, was to identify Coimbra as a city in constant evolution, through the claim "Currents of Change".

It was essential to dismiss the idea of that old, asleep, exhausted and empty Coimbra. Without forgetting its cultural power,
it was imperative
that the visual identity
was modern, dynamic, integrative, without neglecting the river, the Fado, history,
the university and the people.

The concept was to define culture in Coimbra through four different areas: artistic and musical culture, culture as knowledge,
historical culture and culture as a process present in the customs and experience of a society. The typography, inspired by the arches
and the city windows, is composed of these symbols and a black line. In this way, the solidification of Conimbricense culture was represented:
the black line is the consolidation of each type of culture, the colored symbols, which are still built and developed today.















Coimbra Culture is not something finished. It is built daily, with an eye on the future and knowledge of the past.

This colorful process of building a society culturally is done with the same simplicity with a student from Coimbra puts his black cape,
symbol of saudade and irreverence, on his shoulders. She, too, consolidates a young and colorful student into an experienced adult.
